DISABILITY RIGHTS ADVOCATES SEE \u201cDOUBLE STANDARD\u201d IN PAEDIATRIC SOCIETY PAPER<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOur society supports suicide prevention programs for non-disabled teens. Why should ill and disabled youth be enabled to kill themselves via assisted suicide? \u00a0This double standard shows a clear bias against life with a disability,\u201d said Taylor Hyatt, policy analyst and outreach coordinator for Toujours Vivant-Not Dead Yet.\u00a0 TVNDY is a nonreligious and nonpartisan organization of Canadians with disabilities who oppose assisted suicide.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe already have laws that restrict teens\u2019 freedom in order to prevent self-harm,\u201d added Hyatt. \u201cFor example, we enforce minimum ages for the purchase of tobacco or alcohol. Why shouldn’t an equally serious matter \u2013 assisted suicide \u2013 be treated the same way?\u201d\u00a0 Hyatt was responding to the publication last week of a position paper by the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) showing a high demand among parents for euthanasia of ill and disabled children.<\/p>\n

Hyatt noted that the CPS\u2019 proposal goes beyond the study of extending euthanasia to \u201cmature minors\u201d mandated by Canada\u2019s assisted suicide legislation. \u00a0Newborns and children too young to consent to medical treatment would also be eligible. \u201cThe demand for assisted suicide from parents is troubling. Non-disabled parents of disabled children may view the child\u2019s life as a burden, a tragedy, or \u2018not worth living.\u2019\u201d Hyatt stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cA child exposed to these beliefs will often develop low self-esteem, which can lead to suicidal feelings. The real issue is societal discrimination \u2013 not the disability,\u201d said Hyatt.\u00a0 In addition, negative messages are re-enforced by isolation and a lack of role models for ill and disabled young people.<\/p>\n

Parents\u2019 biases also manifest in more extreme ways. \u00a0Some demand major surgeries to simplify their child\u2019s care, such as sterilization. \u201cEspecially in the case of very young children, we must ask whose \u2018suffering\u2019 assisted suicide is designed to prevent.\u201d Hyatt concluded.<\/p>\n

Toujours Vivant-Not Dead Yet (TVNDY) is an organization by and for people with disabilities and our allies. Its goal is to inform, unify and give a voice to disabled people who oppose assisted suicide, euthanasia and other discriminatory end-of-life practices.<\/p>\n
